We recently caught up with Olivia Connelly about her commitment to showcasing international artists and championing their work in the UK.
Our attention first turned to international artists when we saw the emotive, vibrant work coming through the Brazilian street art movement. The attraction for us was the raw emerging talent, and artists such as Tinho and Waleska Nomura have since enjoyed a huge collector’s following in the UK and worldwide.
This joyful experience led us to investigate further afield and in Mexico we discovered the brilliant collective Arte Cocodrilo, a group of young artists working in Oaxaca, a region renowned for traditional techniques. Artists include Uriel Marin whose incredibly intricate and beautiful woodcuts have won him many prestigious international awards and dedicated collectors.
Another favourite among our international stable is Argentinian artist Gustavo Ortiz, whose warm colours are inspired by South American textiles and whose pieces are born from the myths and legends of his home country. An Ortiz collector with only one piece is a rare thing - we find most are so charmed by his work that they buy two or more pieces at once, often returning again and again to add to their collection. We have even had tears at art fairs when people have thought too long about a piece and returned to find it sold!
There is a wealth of talent out there and it’s a privilege to champion it here in the UK.
Don't forget that you can use Own Art to spread the cost of acquiring work to start or develop your collection with Olivia Connelly. For more information about the gallery and their artists, please visit the website.
