Applying for Membership

If you are a gallery or arts organisation based in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland and you’re interested in joining the scheme, you can apply online via the Creative United website (Own Art is managed by Creative United).

To be eligible for Own Art membership, you must be able to meet the following requirements and membership criteria:

  • Specialise in the sale of original works of art by living artists
  • Be accessible to the public either by gallery or website
  • Operate regular opening hours, rather than opening on an appointment only basis
  • Actively encourage new buyers of contemporary art and craft by providing appropriate customer service and advice
  • Represent a number of individual artists, rather than selling the work of a single artist only
  • Be able to supply a copy of your most recent financial accounts, or an opening balance sheet if you have been trading for less than 12 months
  • Operate a UK bank account capable of accepting payments by BACS and can provide a blank cheque, paying in slip or bank statement corresponding to this account

Please note that there is a non-refundable application fee of £250 to apply for Own Art membership. This fee contributes towards the administrative costs of processing your application, including the costs of undertaking a ‘mystery shopper’ site visit which forms part of the assessment process.

Own Art members are also required to pay an annual fee of £240 (plus VAT) once they have been on the scheme for 12 months. The annual fee is essential to allow the continued growth and promotion of the Own Art scheme for the benefit of our customers, members and the artists whose work they represent, and gives members access to a great range of exclusive benefits and discounts:

  • Own Art interest free credit for loans of up to £2,500 at just 2.5%
  • Own Art Plus interest free credit loans of up to £25,000 at 8.5%
  • Online promotion via this website
  • Promotion via Own Art social media including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
  • Opportunity to be included in our monthly e-newsletter
  • Free point of sale marketing materials and digital assets
  • Free Own Art and Own Art Plus video training
  • Free guidance on how to create artist contracts and a written complaints procedure, a requirement for galleries offering credit
  • Free guide on GDPR compliance
  • Telephone and email support from Creative United’s dedicated Own Art team
  • Being part of the largest membership body of contemporary art and craft organisations in the UK

In addition, we have worked with a range of providers to develop the following benefits exclusive to Own Art member in 2018/19:

  • Free financial management and business plan templates from Creative United’s business support and consultancy services, and 20% off any workshops, masterclasses or webinars that may be programmed by Creative United throughout the course of the year
  • 20% discount on the rates for Tags and Certificates with free subscription to the Tagsmart platform
  • 10% off membership to the Arts Marketing Association for organisations with 10 members of staff or fewer, in addition to 1 free online marketing workshop for all Own Art members and a copy of JAM available on request
