There are various things you can do to increase your appetite for art as well as build on your knowledge base.

Art fairs

Visit art fairs where you can see many different galleries in one place.  Remember that gallery owners will represent more artists than they have space to show on their stands so don’t be afraid to ask to see more work.

Galleries

Pop into galleries and talk to staff.  Once they have an idea of what you like they will be able to show you a range of artists’ work which may suit your tastes.  Ask to be put on a gallery’s mailing list, and follow artists whose work you like.

Knowing the history and techniques of art will help you make more informed decisions about your purchases.  Galleries are happy to talk to you about the artists and their techniques.

Degree shows

Discover new talent at art school annual degree shows.  These usually take place in May or June.  You might spot a star of the future.

Open studios

Open Studio events are opportunities for buyers and browsers to meet artists and buy from their studios on specific days, or one weekend in the year.  Keep an eye on Art Intelligence for updates on events happening all over the country. 

On the web

Look online.  Try searching the Own Art website in our Find a Gallery section.   We have more than 300 galleries operating the scheme throughout England and Scotland.

Many galleries now sell work online. To get a sense of what's available take a look at the Culture Label Own Art online store where 54 Own Art galleries are currently represented.

Magazines and listings information

There are lots of contemporary art and craft magazines that are published both online and offline, which feature a wide selection of listings information and reviews of current shows, along with interviews with artists and collectors.
