New Beginnings

by Fenwick Gallery | Warkworth
Date of event: 01/01/20 - 31/03/20

The exhibition will also mark the start of a year long celebration, bringing together artists and sculptors from all over the UK who create unique sculptures, paintings, jewellery and ceramics which all have a link to near-lost magic, beauty and strangeness of the natural world and some of the twenty ‘Lost Words’

The Lost Words is a spell book written by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris which explores words that have started to vanish from the language of children. ‘They disappeared so quietly that at first almost no one noticed – fading away like water on stone.’

The words were those that children used to name the natural world around them: acorn, adder, bluebell, bramble, conker… gone! Fern, heather, kingfisher, otter, raven, willow, wren – all of them gone! The words were becoming lost…”

‘New Beginnings’ celebrates the colours of Spring and the peace of Winter and will introduce new artists to Fenwick Gallery such as Zoe Stainton, David Mayne, Dee Nickerson, Ralph Jandrell, Jackie Morris and many more; we will also have new work from our existing artists such as Richard Barrett, Nicole Fenwick and Becky Crow…

Taking the form of twenty ‘lost’ words, collected alphabetically from ‘Acorn’ to ‘Wren’ each word becomes a spell – written by Robert Macfarlane, which is intended to be read aloud.

The images – painted by Jackie Morris, capture first the absence of the plant or creature within its habitat and then its return. The spell summons the image and the word back into being, making this a book of enchantment in more than one sense.

‘New beginnings’ will explore the ‘Lost Words’ through a series of beautiful limited edition prints by Jackie Morris and a collection of rare and beautiful pieces created by British artists and makers; creating a celebration of near-lost magic, beauty and strangeness of the natural world.

‘New Beginnings’ will start on 01 January and run until 31 March 2020
