Own Art x Toast Ale
With galleries beginning to safely open their doors, this is the perfect time to get to know our new partners at Toast Ale and introduce the planet-saving offers they have for Own Art member galleries.
Toast Ale is on a mission to fix the food system over a beer, promoting change in a sociable, celebratory and epic way. Food production is responsible for 80% of deforestation, 70% of freshwater use, 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and is the largest contributor to soil erosion and
biodiversity loss. Yet one-third of food goes to waste.
Toast Ale beers are brewed with surplus fresh bread from bakeries and sandwich makers. The bread replaces one-third of the malted barley – it’s planet-saving and palette-pleasing!

Toast Ale can now deliver nationwide!
Own Art members enjoy a discounted rate of £16.80/case. To take advantage of this benefit and to discuss your order, contact Toast Ale and quote “Own Art”.

Tell us how Toast Ale is saving the world (thank you for that, by the way).
Ha, great question. Toast brew our Planet-Saving beer using surplus bread that would otherwise go to waste, and we donate 100% of our profits to environmental charities. You see, 44% of the bread baked in the UK is never consumed so we brew it into delicious craft beer.
Which is your most popular beer and why?
We have 4 core beers in our range: a classic well-hopped English Pale Ale, a more tropical and zesty American Pale Ale, a crisp and refreshing European style Craft Lager and a well-balanced citrussy Session IPA. All have their moments and I wouldn’t want to pick a ‘most popular’ from my babies – but in the sunshine, we’re experiencing right now our American Pale Ale and the Lager are both firm crowd-pleasers.
Toast Ale is incredibly driven when it comes to social responsibility, are there any exciting new projects in the pipeline that you’ll be supporting?
Always! We are also about to launch our beer on tap to anyone in London, delivered by pedal bikes, in re-usable/returnable glass containers. So we can get our planet-saving beer to people in a delicious, cold, fresh format with as little environmental impact as possible. If this proves popular then we’ll look to expand nationally ASAP.
How have you been navigating throughout COVID-19 lockdown?
As with all business and indeed like it has been for all of us, it’s been a very challenging period. Around 70% of our business was in bars, restaurants, pubs and hospitality so sales really fell off a cliff in March. However, we appreciated that during this period there were more pressing priorities to be considered. So we immediately re-built our website for online sales and we launched our ‘Meal Deal’ initiative in late March to try and do our bit to help. For every beer purchased from our online shop since the crisis began, we have donated a meal to someone in need. This has provided for over 35,000 meals so far. Our staff team have been phenomenal. Many are juggling child care and various personal challenges. Some of our team have also had to be Furloughed, all of whom have been busy volunteering their time to support local feeding initiatives required during the crisis. I couldn’t be prouder of how the team have all responded.
Do you have any new products or services in place?
As already mentioned, we are launching Toast on Tap for delivery. We’ve also rebuilt the webshop and have a new range of mixed packs of our beer, including some that include limited edition Toast glassware! Check it out at www.toastale.com
