Private View: All the Colours of Emotion, 6pm – 10pm

by Graystone Gallery | Edinburgh
Date of event: 16 May 24

Every emotion has a colour. Warm colours like reds, oranges, and yellows evoke feelings of energy, passion, and warmth. They ignite excitement and stimulate the senses, drawing our attention with their vibrant intensity. Cool colours such as blues, greens, and purples elicit calmness, serenity, and introspection. They have a soothing effect, inviting us to contemplate and reflect. Each mark, colour and shape brings us closer to understanding not just ourselves but other perspectives.

All the Colours of Emotion throws us deep into each artist’s world. Take David Binns’ asymmetric ceramics – bold in shape, yet visually rich and informed by multiple countries and cultures. Or Jane Hunter’s lovingly crafted abstract works. Both artists absorb and interpret their environments, building emotional connections with the natural world. Mary McDonald interrogates the landscape around her, not just simplifying and abstracting the lines and shapes she sees but imbuing them with her own feelings and perceptions. Ceramicist Janene Waudbry is equally influenced by her surroundings, with her vessels evoking the colours and textures found around the Scottish coast. Sue Shields shares her love of all things coastal, perceiving shapes and forms within the landscape and its implausible beauty.
