‘We called Yesterday, today’, Cupola’s Christmas show is all about the intrinsic link between our past ideas of the future and our reflections on the past. Christmas is often a time of reflection; a pause to celebrate and look forward to the year ahead.
Time marches on and today’s pleasures are tomorrow’s memories. Over 85 artists are taking part in Cupola’s Christmas exhibition with new works alongside regular exhibitors. A cornucopia of personal, idiosyncratic art across media. The gallery specialises in contemporary artwork made by living artists.
“When you are in the act of creating, you are the most ‘you’ you ever are. Artists make work because they are compelled to do so. There is joy to be experienced when a private act of making brings pleasure to an unknown viewer. The phrase, ‘ I don’t know why that appeals, but it does’, is the magic that we wish to share. Experience of an artwork can connect to an unconscious part of ourselves. How special is that?” Karen Sherwood, Director.
We called yesterday today features work from around the country as well as from lots of locally based talent. Ceramics feature heavily this year with many decorative as well as functional items. Painting, both abstract and figurative, printmaking, glass, jewellery, sculpture, textiles and photography are represented. Our connection to and our impact on the natural world is very evident in the work as well as references to history both personal and universal.
