Echoes of Yesterday exhibition by Saffron Monk-Smith aims to explore the increasing importance of memory in her life. Her intimate paintings capture a visual diary; places of passing insignificance or of particular importance.
Saffron explains
“These are paintings of places that are newly discovered to me, and paintings of places that hold a particular importance to me that I rediscover through paint.
In the absence of daylight, darkness can flatten time, allowing personal associations, half-remembered moments, and imagined histories to surface. Through painting, I try to mimic how memory works; selective, quiet, random and without hierarchy. The places that hold memory also depict new narratives to me as they are brushed onto the surface.”
Saffron Monks-Smith graduated in 2020 with a Masters in Art from Ulster University. She has already received several awards for her art and her new work builds on this. Her current artworks expand on the idea of memory and atmosphere.
Her work featured in an exhibition of Recent Female Graduates in London in 2024 and it is held in many collections, including the permanent collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
You can also buy art from this exhibition through the Own Art scheme which gives you an interest-free loan over 10 months (and you still get to take the art home immediately the exhibition ends).
