Eminent Authors – An Exhibition by Neil Shawcross

Neil Shawcross is well known for his love of books, with a long running series of paintings based on the covers of the iconic penguin books. This exhibition features a selection of these works from across the years. This festival of books and art, includes the covers of well-known classics by Emily Bronte and Andy Warhol through to personal favourites by Fred Hoyle and Ralph Ellison.

 

Neil is one of Northern Ireland’s leading artists. Although born in Lancashire he has lived and worked in Northern Ireland since 1962, when he became a lecturer in art at the Belfast Art College / Ulster University.

 

His work has been exhibited widely, and is held in the permanent collections of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Civil Service and the Ulster Museum.

 

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Ulster Academy of Art in 1975 and was made a full Academician in 1977. He has won the Academy’s Conor Award, Gold Medal and its James Adam Prize.

 

Neil was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to arts in Northern Ireland.
