How To Hygge with Own Art
We’ve all heard about the Hygge hype (pronounced “hoo-guh”, for those who haven’t already searched). It’s that delicious quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that invokes contentment or well-being; a wonderful culture we have adopted from our Danish friends. Warm socks, blankets, pine fresh candles, sipping hot chocolate in the company of friends and finding joy in each moment.
Although there’s no direct English translation, I think we’ve picked up on the essence of hygge rather well, especially in the run-up to Christmas. Winter is the most “hygge” time of year and we go all out in our cooler months, from wrapped up bonfire nights to scrabble with hot toddies. Even our pubs share the same ambience, with their cosy booths, live fireplaces and selection of board games to relax to.
You can’t escape the Hygge hype – and why would you want to? The cosiness can be experienced and shared with little effort, however, this can be enhanced if you have the right tools. As we all know, Hygge celebrates superior handicrafts and Scandinavian design: scented candles, knitted throws, handmade ceramic coffee mugs. It’s no secret that the Brits share the same enthusiasm and support towards craft, as has been made evident in Craft Council’s 2020 Market for Craft Report where it states that there has been a four-fold increase in the volume of craft objects bought annually between 2006 and 2020; from £883m in craft sales in 2006 to over £3b in 2019.
