South London Art Map
The South London Art Map was launched in February 2011, putting art south of the river on the map.
A must for art lovers, the initiative includes a printed map and interactive website featuring over 90 art galleries, co-ordinated late gallery openings, and art tours of South London.
South London Art Map builds on the success of the Deptford Art Map, and the already established ‘Time Out First Thursdays run by the Whitechapel Gallery in East London.’
The initiative is a one-stop resource for the visual arts in South London from Bankside to Greenwich. South London’s arts scene boasts a wealth of creativity – from the urban surroundings, creative enclaves of galleries, artists’ studios and pop-up shops inhabiting what were once industrial buildings and old pubs.
The handy printed map is available from art venues across London and to download from the website. It focuses on three hubs of artistic activity: Deptford – where there are more emerging artists per square mile than in any other part of London, Peckham, which, with the annual Bold Tendencies exhibition in a multi-storey car park is a cutting edge destination for arts, and Bankside, where Tate Modern sits alongside a wealth of artist run and commercial spaces which take you off the beaten track.
In addition to picking up a map, join one of South London Art Map’s comprehensive guided tours, led by a local artist or curator, to visit key galleries and studios, and to be introduced to gallery owners and artists along the way. This is a must for artists, collectors and art enthusiasts! Tours are run on the first Saturday (daytime 2 – 4pm) and the last Friday (evening 6 – 8.30pm) of every month. You can book places for tours online
The website also offers an online calendar of exhibitions and magazine of highlights.
