Sheffield has everything, except the sea!
“Sheffield has it all – well nearly all. I love Sheffield and have called it home for over 30 years but the one thing I do wish it had was a coastline, but hey I can’t have it all – or can I?”
-Karen Sherwood, Director, Cupola Gallery
Karen Sherwood, founder and director of Cupola Gallery, Sheffield is hosting a solo show of her own work for the first time in two years.
Karen Sherwood is showing a new collection of work painted over the last two years. Despite being landlocked in her home city of Sheffield, Ms Sherwood regularly paints the sea.

"So why do my paintings end up at the sea? Is it a reflection of our unsettled times or is it because I have a desire to escape to the sea? I have said before and still believe it to be true that my paintings reflect a personal response to my experience of what is happening in my world. This is reflected in the mood, colour and composition of my landscapes/seascapes. Also, I do love the sea, so clearly as Sheffield doesn't have a coastline I have simply brought one, or several, to me!
I have called the exhibition a sense of place as I have noticed that my paintings are becoming more grounded, with a definite sense of land/sea and sky. Is this development a response to how important 'place' is becoming to so many? Our identity and sense of belonging is often linked to a significant place or places. There are certainly many proud 'Yorkshire' men and women.
I feel that the finished paintings often remind me of somewhere that I can’t pinpoint. I do not know if they are partly remembered places I have visited or seen as they simply evolve through the act of painting. I never work from drawings or sketches or photographs.
Turner is a major influence. His ability to depict light is unmatched.
I do not know why I do what I do but I know I have to paint and I hope that some of my paintings might connect to a place or a memory of your own. " Karen Sherwood, Director, Cupola Gallery.
