‘Innocence and Mischief’ – exhibition by Corinna Button and Anne Lynch
We are inviting visitors to delve into the world of powerful and complex imagination, expressed in the artworks by two strong female presences with unfettered artistic energy.
In a series of portraits and figurative compositions, the women in Corinna Button’s prints and oil paintings are an epitome of feminine vitality that knows no boundaries and bravely expresses a delicate balance between feminine sensuality and occasional mischief.
Although for centuries men have been trying to investigate ‘the duality’ of human nature, Button’s creative process has led her to the poetic concept of triality. The repeated motif of her ‘triple’ faces, turning in three different directions, and yet being part of the same being, is a striking metaphor for the loops and cycles of change.
This tuning of the soul transits from stages of confusion (‘Confusion’, ‘Over my Head’) and certainty (‘If you Play your Cards Right’, ‘Instant Reply’) and leading to a state of creative motion (‘Spinning the Yarn’, ‘Three Point Turn’).
The triumph of womanhood – strong, vivid and boldly manifesting its leading and powerful role is exuded in works such as ‘Showcasing’, ‘Snap Happy’.
Anne Lynch’s exploration of the relationships between women (‘Innocence and Mischief’), children and mothers (‘Being Strong for the Young’), and the liberties of being a child and seeing the world from a child’s perspective, result in a series of watercolor paintings, mixed with curious collage techniques.
There is a poetic notion in every little detail in Anne’s work – the domestic environments are elevated by the magical presence of flowers and houseplants in vivid and memorable palettes.
Like in a classic fairy tale, Lynch’s figures of adults are seen as good ‘giants’, often existing in the painting from their waist down – as helpful and comforting figures, that would not disturb children’s intuitive process of discovering the world as a magical and not a restrictive place.
